Alphabet Soup: DBE, SBE, WBE . . . WTF?

It’s been more than a year in the works, but Layer Cake has finished and submitted the (massive amount of) paperwork for designation as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE)/Woman Business Enterprise (WBE).  “Disadvantaged?”  Sounds like something bad, right?  Actually, it’s quite the opposite.  For those unfamiliar, it’s the municipal/construction industry equivalent of affirmative action. We’re now “official” with the RTD and “in process” with the City of Denver. If you’re a firm looking to satisfy DBE requirements, we’re a particularly smart choice because our expertise in Public Involvement, PR, and Design doesn’t overlap with yours, but brings added value to your team. Call us before you submit your next response to a public RFQ / RFP!

Cake Tip: Making Video Viral

Everyone knows that video can “go viral.” This dynamic medium has unparalleled ability to capture people’s imagination, distribute information, and convey emotion. Combined with savvy social media, video can reach a global audience. Next time you’re planning an event (especially if it’s annual) – a fundraiser, a performance, a ground-breaking, etc. – plan to capture it on video and share clips online. Going the extra mile to plan shots and script talking points will really pay off with more targeted clips that will get more play, more shares – and likely more people talking. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be the next talking dog with over 98 million views!  If you aren’t sure where to start, we offer full-service packages for event promotion, video, and social media.  Here’s a short clip we put together for the Denver Art Museum’s recent Design After Dark event, where design firms, emerging architects and artists, and a wide range of creative individuals construct innovative one-of-a-kind objects to be auctioned off at the end of the night.:

Media Relations: Beyond the Press Release

A good agency’s work is never done (sigh). Many people think that getting good press begins with the press release and ends with distribution, but outstanding media coverage also requires cultivation of excellent media relations.  At Layer Cake, we treat reporters, editors, producers and members of the media like clients, colleagues, and friends: we make their work lives easier and more pleasant. We do whatever is needed to make a shoot or an interview possible. Once, we even had to entertain a 6-year-old for an interviewee whose babysitter cancelled!  Members of the media are invaluable partners to us and to our clients, and media relations is how we let them know they’re appreciated.Click here to read our recent blog post on this topic.

Tasty Recipe: Chocolate Chip Irish Cream Cupcakes w/ Bailey’s Buttercream

Yield: 24 cupcakes
Prep Time: 45 min
Cook Time: 20 min
This Bailey’s-infused cupcake is especially for the cupcake-loving adults out there…

Ingredients:

CUPCAKES:
3/4 cup miniature chocolate chips
1/2 Tablespoon cake flour
2 3/4 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cream cheese, at room temperature
10 Tablespoons butter, at room temperature
1 cup granulated white sugar
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 large eggs
3/4 cup Irish Cream Liqueur (Bailey’s)
BUTTERCREAM:
1 cup butter (2 sticks), at room temperature
3 cups powdered sugar
4 Tablespoons Bailey’s Irish Cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line cupcake tins with 24 cupcake liners.
2. In a small bowl, toss together chocolate chips and 1/2 Tablespoon flour.
3. Sift together dry ingredients- flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.
4. In a large bowl, use electric mixer to combine cream cheese and butter. Add sugars and vanilla; beat until blended. Add eggs and beat until incorporated. With mixer on low, add flour mixture and liqueur alternately to the wet mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Gently stir in chocolate chips.
5. Spoon batter into cupcake liners, filling them almost to the top (they shouldn’t rise much). I like to use an ice cream scoop to get the batter neatly into the liners. Bake cupcakes 18 to 22 minutes, or until centers of cupcakes are set.
6. To make buttercream: Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Use electric mixer to blend together; mix until smooth and creamy.
